Even Pirate Dog, who is lovely but not the cleverest of creatures, has noticed that Frantic Assembly is one of the brightest and best of Britain’s wide spread of theatre companies. Some of their greatest shows — Abi Morgan’s Tiny Dynamite or the recent Othello — explore theatricality in innovative, intelligent and absolutely thrilling ways. Now two of the three founding members, artistic directors Scott Graham and Steven Hoggett, have published a book, The Frantic Assembly Book of Devising Theatre (Routledge), which looks at the history of the company and gives some good practical advice on writing, devising and choreography. Lovely illustrations, plus a companion website, with a fascinating rehearsal diary…
