Belatedly, here is a link to Where Do We Go from Here?, the text of director Mike Bradwell’s speech to the Society for Theatre Research, on 19 October at the Swedenborg Hall. In this great rant, provocative and thought-provoking in equal measure, the former artistic director of the Bush reiterates the powerful point that he makes in his wonderful autobiography — The Reluctant Escapologist — that what theatre needs is good plays, good playwrights and good directors and actors. Not more consultants, marketing managers, and press officers. Not more fund-raisers and consumer pundits. It’s well worth reading. And surely isn’t it yet another sign of the growing spirit of defiance which is haunting the land?
